I was listening to Robert Jeffers several weeks ago and heard this illustration. After listening to the account, I wanted to make sure it was historically accurate, and indeed it is. In fact, John Todd wrote of this event in his autobiography as pictured below from that book.

Who: John Todd, born October 9, 1800
“Dr. Todd was remarkably successful as a pastor, and also wielded a powerful influence as an author. He published over thirty volumes, besides many sermons and pamphlets. His most widely known book, “The Student’s Manual,” was first published in 1835.
The Reverend Doctor Was also notable for having taken part of the Golden Spike Ceremony at Promontory Point, Utah on May 10th 1869. During the event, Dr. Todd gave a prayer that was broadcast throughout the nation.”
Where: Ruthland, Vermont
What: His father died when he was six years old, and his mother was unable to take care of him.
“The father died when John was six years old; the mother, who became insane at his birth, lived for many years without recovering her reason.”
